The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is funding an investigation of methods of predicting energy losses in refrigerated warehouses due to infiltration. This report summarizes a literature search conducted under Phase I of t h i s program by the Technology Applications Laboratory of the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station . The purpose of the literature review was to identify and document the history of research conducted to the present in the area of infiltration prediction for refrigerated warehouses. The objective of this ASHRAE program of research is to update the information contained in their various publications and handbooks, thereby improving methods used by practicing engineers in predicting infiltration.

Phase I of the research project , the literature review, has resulted in the identification of a number of published works which deal with analytical methods of predicting infiltration in cold storage facilities. The major areas of concentration are in predicting heat and mass transfer by natural convection through open doors, and in estimating the heat and mass transfer across an air curtain. Other non-analytical references include design criteria and guidelines for cold storage doors, vapor barriers, and air curtains. A total of 68 references is cited in the bibliography that accompanies this report.

Also included in this report is an outline of a field test program to be conducted during Phase II of this research project. The field test program will verify the accuracy of two analytical solutions to infiltration encountered during the literature review, and will also amass additional field data which can be consolidated into graphs, tables, and charts to be used as design tools in ASHRAE publications.
