Global Warming Implications of Replacing Ozone-Depleting Refrigerants

Journal Article by ASHRAE, 1998

Description

Presents insights into the actual impact from ozone-depleting refrigerants. Demonstrates that CO2 from energy consumption has a far greater impact on global warming than the emissions from refrigerants used in chillers, unitary equipment and household refrigerators. Notes the exception is supermarkets, where refrigerant leakage rates can run to 10%-15%. States that alternative technologies have the potential to reduce total equivalent warming impact significantly, with no clear advantage to ‘natural’ or hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants.
