Ground source heat pumps will be a partial solution to the decarbonization of campuses.  However, space limitations and underground infrastructure may restrict heating and cooling capacity.  Integrating GSHP with thermal energy storage may permit a reduction in the geo-exchange loop and even provide for seasonal storage.  Princeton University is currently converting from chilled water and steam, to chilled water and low temperature hot water using heat pumps, geo-exchange, and thermal energy storage.
