Description
Fluid dynamic gauging (FDG) can be used to measure the thickness of soft deposits on surfaces that are embedded in liquids. Till date, there is yet nopaper that has presented a structured uncertainty analysis for FDG. The main purpose of this paper is to present the methodological uncertainty analysisof a FDG instrument. A test facility is developed to experimentally characterize the performance of the instrument which is calibrated at roomtemperature conditions, and an uncertainty assessment of the instrument is subsequently performed. The results show that the instrument can be used toestimate the clearance of a nozzle from a wall surface in water to a minimum uncertainty of ±0.025 mm [plus or minus 0.00098 in] at a 95% confidence. Theuncertainty in the clearance of the instrument is found to be dominated by the systematic uncertainty in the pressure drop especially when the nozzle is farfrom the wall. It is anticipated that the comparison of in situ thickness measurements against uncertainty thresholds can serve as a monitoring techniqueto mitigate the accumulation of fouling deposits in operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment.
