Description

This paper presents a summary of the final report for ASHRAE research project RP-1056. This project consisted of a field study to validate ASHRAE Standard 152P, Method of Test for Determining the Steady-State and Seasonal Efficien-cies of Residential Thermal Distribution Systems. Detailed diagnostic measurements were made and predicted efficien-cies were compared to efficiencies measured using the coheat method. While many portions of the standard were found to be adequate, the project found problems in the ability of the duct leakage measurement methods described in the standard to consistently and accurately estimate the duct leakage, which translates into significant errors in predicted efficiencies. Other methods of estimating duct leakage were also evaluated. One test, called the nulling test, showed significant promise. Detailed conclusions about the leakage techniques and other portions of the standard are also provided.
