Description
One of the greatest challenges of our society is to provide a continuous supply of electricity to everyone according to their need. The energy consumption is at an alarming level and it is likely that the world will two-fold its energy generation by 2050. It is vital to develop the new and energy efficient technologies which convert the energy as well as store it when there is an excess of generation. Energy storage integrates renewable energy resources with the existing power grids as the output from the renewable resources is variable because of their nature. Energy storage empowers us to utilize renewables in a more flexible and efficient way. Energy storage can be measured in hours, days or can go up to months depending upon the type of storage system used. Storage can be electrical, thermal, chemical, compressed air and so on. Advancement in the energy storage technologies and materials help to mitigate the peak demand in efficient manner. More energy efficient system allows us to increase the amount of generation from renewables locally and provide opportunities for demand-side management and also to reduce the carbon credits in electricity, heating and cooling sectors. Although a variety of factors such as structure and properties of the component material effects the energy conversion efficiency. This paper represents the comprehensive review of the advancements in the exploration and expansion of technologies for efficient energy conversion and storage, along with some discussions on barriers and perspectives in this exciting field.
