Description

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is the technology responsible to maintain temperature levels and air quality in buildings to appropriate standards. An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a central air conditioning station that handles the air that, usually, will be supplied into the buildings by the ventilation ductwork (connected to the AHU). Handling the air means that the air will be delivered into the building spaces with thermo-hygrometric and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) treatment. Air Quality of the air is generally maintained with the help of a passive air purification system which consist of various filters like Pre filter, Fine filter, HEPA filter, etc. Passive air purification has a lot of limitations as it can only filter out the air up to some micron but doesn’t disinfect the air or the surrounding. During the covid period, the task was not only to improve the quality of air by reducing odors, air pollutants, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), smoke, mold, bacteria, and viruses but to neutralize the deadly coronavirus present in our closed surroundings. UVC lamps were used for this purpose but it had a limitation that for it to properly neutralize the coronavirus, UVC had to come in direct contact with the virus for some decent time which is not really possible inside an AHU Another possible way is to produce purified hydrogen peroxide gas which is a well-known disinfectant, a redox reaction between Oxygen and Moisture present in air in the presence of UVC light exposure and the catalyst titanium dioxide will yield Purified hydrogen peroxide gas which can be used to disinfect the air as well as the surrounding. Based on the theoretical and experimental analysis of the setup, the dry bulb temperature of air decreases by 22%-27% and Rh increases by 5% as it passes through the evaporator coil whereas when it moves away from the evaporator coil an increases in dry bulb temperature by 4%-5% and increase in Rh by 8% is recorded. For the disinfection of air with the help of Active purification system a decrease in AQI reading by 70%-75%, CO reading by 72%-76%, CO 2 by 13% – 14%, HCHO by 66%-70% and TVOC by 55%-60%. The results show the overall improvement of dry bulb temperature by 8%, Rh by 2% and different gasses present in air by 55% – 75% in a single pass of air. The analysis done of the results here present a basis for the future scope of work and further development of the model with real world industrial relevance and need.
