Description

At a time of growing dependency on IT for both efficacy in business and the demands of social media in private life, the energy consumption of data centers continues to increase. Today, it exceeds 2% of the total energy consumption in the United States. While considerable attention has been paid to addressing this issue for new data center designs, legacy facilities have not really been addressed. Legacy data centers present a classic challenge: it is difficult to upgrade them while they are live. While a number of options exist, including the improvement of air management, containment, and alternative/supplemental cooling, guidance is limited. This paper identifies and considers some of the alternatives that can be applied to the white space, the motivation for considering them, the potential for conflict, and some of the dos and don’ts associated with them.
