Help ensure smoke control systems will effectively manage smoke in the event of a fire with NFPA 92.

NFPA 92, Standard for Smoke Control Systems, combines the requirements of former standards NFPA 92A, Standard for Smoke-Control Systems Utilizing Barriers and Pressure Differences, and NFPA 92B, Standard for Smoke Management Systems in Malls, Atria, and Large Spaces. It covers all types of systems used to address the impact of smoke, as well as their design, installation, and testing.

A one-stop reference for enforcers, engineers, architects, and industry professionals concerned with or responsible for public safety.

In the 2021 edition of NFPA 92, several chapters have been revised. The requirements for door design numbers in Chapter 4 and the requirements for the number of doors that must be open during testing of smoke containment and stairwell pressurization systems in Chapter 8 have been edited for clarity to only apply to doors that automatically open as part of the smoke control strategy. In addition, new Annex A material has been added to help guide professionals working with systems with makeup air velocities exceeding 200 ft/min (1 m/s). Finally, equations and values were updated throughout NPFA 92 to make the document fully compatible for SI (metric) users.

The chapters in NFPA 92 address topics, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Design fundamentals
  • Smoke management calculation procedures
  • Building equipment and controls
  • Smoke control system documentation
  • Testing

In addition, NFPA 92 includes expansive explanatory material filled with tables, charts, and state-of-the-art calculations; techniques for predicting the rate of heat release of fires; information on computer-based models for atria and malls; guidance on additional design objectives; information on the stratification of smoke; the types of stairwell pressurization systems; information on HVAC air-handling systems; and more. (Print, Approx. 87 pp., 2021)
