An occupant survey was conducted in order to understand the relationship between mechanical ventilation characteristics and occupant satisfaction in California homes constructed since 2002. The online survey asked participants questions relative to the following: year and type of construction, household characteristics, installed gas appliances and mechanical ventilation equipment, use of natural and mechanical ventilation, and satisfaction with comfort and indoor air quality (IAQ). Fairly complete responses were provided by 2,648 participants, mostly from Southern California. These responses showed that most respondents lived in single-family detached homes, built between 2002 and 2006 (pre-ventilation standards in California), with floor areas between 140 and 279 m2. Most answered that they have mechanical ventilation equipment (kitchen range hood and bathroom exhaust fans) in their home. Overall, respondents reported greater satisfaction with their IAQ than outdoor air quality (OAQ) in the area where they lived. In addition to summarizing the data, we applied an ordinal logistic regression analysis to characterize the relationship between occupant IAQ satisfaction and IAQ-related home characteristics (such as floor area, number of occupants, kitchen and bathroom ventilation, window opening, and use of air cleaners). The significant factors associated with lower IAQ satisfaction were a higher number of occupants and the presence of odor issues. IAQ satisfaction was influenced by other indoor environmental conditions.
