This paper concerns ASHRAE Special Project 43 (SP43), directed to the development and validation of a dynamic computer simulation model for predicting the annual performance of residential forced-air heating and cooling systems of different types and having different components. For heating, the SP43 Simulation Model includes the dynamic interaction among the components of the heating system (gas furnace, thermostat, vent system, distribution system) and the house heating load, including effects of infiltration and weather conditions.

The SP43 project has two overall objectives: (1) to provide information for the ASHRAE Handbook on system design, component selection, sizing, and control for energy-efficient annual operation of the heating system and (2) to provide a basis for refinements in ASHRAE and DOE test procedures and consensus standards for furnace performance.

This paper describes the strategy used to validate the SP43 Simulation Model and its major submodels in the heating mode, using field-test data that were obtained in two unoccupied houses instrumented as part of the SP43 project to measure dynamic performance. The paper discusses the validation of the individual submodels (load, furnace, thermostat, and distribution system) and the overall simulation model. Comparisons of model predictions and experimental test data show that the model is capable of predicting the dynamic performance of a house, in response to various weather conditions, for a variety of heating systems and operational strategies.
