Description

Towards the end of the process of evaporation of a refrigerant flowing inside a tube, the liquid film wetting the wall dries out. In the subsequent length of the evaporator tubing, viz., the dry-out transition region, mist flow occurs until the whole of the entrained liquid is evaporated. Whereas much research work has been done to correlate the two-phase heat transfer coefficients before wall dry-out occursl , very little information is reported regarding variation of heat transfer coefficients in the wall dry-out region. Lavin and Young , Chaddock and Bruriemanna , and Varma have studied the heat transfer in wall dry-out region when constant wall heat flux was utilized. However, constant heat flux forces the wall temper.atures to attain very high values, much higher than would be met in an actual refrigerant evaporator. Therefore, a study of fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger should make a significant contribution in understanding the effect of the mode of heating on the distribution of heat transfer coefficients in the dry-out region. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation carried out on a water heated horizontal tube R-12 evaporator.
