There are several technologies currently under development that have the potential to enable existing district heating systems to be converted from oil or gas to; coal. These technologies are coal water mixtures (CWM) and advanced combustors . For certain applications, these technologies may be used in conjunction with an advanced coal preparation process.

The status of these emerging, technologies is described and discussed; in detail.
