SF-86-15-2 — Sand Specification for the Deep-Bed Sand Filter

$7.50

Conference Proceeding by ASHRAE, 1986

Category:

Description

Highly efficient, highly reliable, long-lived filter processes are desirable for off-gas filtration of radioactive air streams. The deep-bed sand filter made up of graded layers of sand and gravel fits this description. The continued utility of the first such filter constructed at the Savannah River DOE facility over 30 years ago has prompted its duplication for other perimeter air-cleaning applications at that site. The graded layers constitute a series filtration process where each layer contributed to the system effectiveness. The layers of finest sand must be specified to meet the process requirements consistent with available product. The effect on performance of even small differences among different sands is described. The use of test data for customizing the specification to the available sand is described . This technique optimizes on-filter performance and vendor capabilities.
