Description
Traditional practice in residential, air-cooled cooling equipment has been to select equipment based solely on the total cooling capacity of the air conditioner. This methodology was widely accepted back in 1960 when the ‘all- Industry Heat Gain Procedure’ was introduced. This procedure was based on the experience in five research houses built between 1940 and 1957 at the University of Illinois. During the ensuing 30 years, both equipment and house construction technology has changed substantially, so much so that the total cooling method cannot be successfully applied to a growing number of installations with adequate confidence. This paper describes a methodology to select residential equipment based on an estimate of both sensible and latent cooling loads and equipment sensible and latent performance.
