Description
Building air-conditioning systems are the single greatest contributor to aggregate peak electrical demand. As a technology, thermal energy storage enables shifting a significant proportion of a facility’s demand for electricity from daytime to nighttime periods. Furthermore, thermal energy storage enables flexibility in the demand for electricity by building air-conditioning systems that operate principally during time periods where renewable energy is plentiful and idling during time periods where renewable energy is sparse or unavailable. This adaptability offers utilities the potential to deploy and utilize an increasing amount of renewable energy generation without risk of overgeneration. Thermal storage allows flexibility in operating the building air-conditioning systems with high electrical demand during time periods where electricity is being generated by renewable means. Through this course, participants will understand how thermal energy storage can enable greater use of renewable energy generation and learn whether an existing or new facility may benefit from the application of a thermal energy storage system. Attendees will also learn about sensible and latent energy storage technologies and alternative sizing strategies.
