The requirements in UL 1285 cover polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVCO) pressure pipe, couplings, and gaskets for use in underground fire service systems and connections to such systems. The pipe is either the distribution or transmission type.

Distribution pipe covered by these requirements shall be designated as Pressure Class 165, 235, and 305 for working pressures of 165, 235, and 305 psig (1.14, 1.62, and 2.10 MPa), respectively, and have a nominal inside diameter in the range of 4 to 12 inches.

Transmission pipe covered by these requirements shall be designated as Pressure Class 100, 125, 160, 165, 200, 235, and 305 for working pressures of 100, 125, 160, 165, 200, 235, and 305 psig (0.69, 0.86, 1.10, 1.14, 1.38, 1.62, and 2.10 MPa), respectively, and have a nominal inside diameter in the range of 14 to 48 inches.

Requirements for the installation and use of PVC pressure pipe and couplings are specified in the Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances, NFPA 24 or the Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13.
